The European Union Reference Laboratory for Public Health on Antimicrobial Resistance in Bacteria
The European Union Reference Laboratory for Public Health on Antimicrobial Resistance in bacteria (EURL-PH-AMR) is one of nine European Union Reference Laboratories (EURL) for Public Health designated by the European Commission (EC).
The European Union Reference Laboratory for Public Health on Antimicrobial Resistance (EURL-PH-AMR), led by Statens Serum Institut and including the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the EUCAST Development Laboratory (EDL), is one of several EU Reference laboratories established under Regulation (EU) 2022/2371 to address cross-border health threats. Its main role is to support the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and European surveillance networks (EARS-Net and EURGen-Net) in combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a major global health threat.
The laboratory works to strengthen diagnostic capacity, harmonise testing methods, and improve the reliability and comparability of microbiology data across EU and neighboring countries. The EURL-PH-AMR provides expertise, reference testing, and coordinated support for outbreak detection, preparedness, and response, helping network countries to manage resistant pathogens more effectively. Overall, the goal of EURL-PH-AMR is to develop and improve strategies for prevention and control of AMR through collaboration, research, and capacity building across Europe.
The EURL-PH-AMR provides:
- Reference diagnostics and testing
- Reference materials and quality assessments
- Scientific advice and technical assistance
- Strengthens laboratory capacity and harmonises methods across countries
- Assists with outbreak detection, monitoring, and response to resistant bacteria
- Promotes collaboration, training, and research in AMR
