Strengthening Denmark’s Infectious Disease Surveillance
The UpSurvDK project represents a coordinated effort to enhance national infectious disease surveillance and early warning systems in Denmark, contributing to improved public health outcomes.
In particular, the project focuses on enhancing Denmark's national infectious disease surveillance through targeted efforts in three priority areas:
- Standardizing Laboratory-Based Reporting and Surveillance
UpSurvDK aims to develop a unified national classification system for clinical microbiology to standardize terminology across laboratories. This includes evaluating the compatibility of the national system with international standards, with a focus on interoperability
- Monitoring Zoonotic Influenza in Humans
To improve the surveillance of zoonotic influenza virus infections, UpSurvDK explores methods for active monitoring in various occupational groups, ensuring early detection and response
- Adapting Surveillance to New Diagnostic Methods
With the adoption of new Culture-Independent Diagnostic Testing in clinical microbiology, UpSurvDK seeks to secure effective surveillance of bacterial foodborne infections in Denmark.
Building on Previous Initiatives and Collaborating with Other EU Projects
UpSurvDK builds on work initiated under the Joint Action UNITED4Surveillance, drawing on existing expertise to strengthen national capabilities. Synergies are also identified with OH4Surveillance and EU-HIP projects.
Enhancing Public Health through Collaboration
UpSurvDK prioritizes collaboration within the health sector and across relevant stakeholders, aligning with a One Health approach to address interconnected health challenges. By addressing infrastructure development, capacity building, piloting, and implementation, UpSurvDK works towards building an integrated surveillance system that is:
- Resilient: Equipped to handle emerging challenges
- Efficient: Delivering timely and accurate data for decision-making
- Comprehensive: Supporting a coordinated approach to surveillance of infectious diseases.
UpSurvDK is coordinated by Statens Serum Institut. The consortium comprises Statens Serum Institut, University of Copenhagen, Danish Health Data Authority, Aarhus University Hospital, Region Zealand and Region of Southern Denmark.
