Purpose
Health data science uses data, methods, and tools to improve population health. It draws on mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, and machine learning to improve our understanding of disease and support healthcare systems.
Tasks
The Department of Data Science and AI in Health at Statens Serum Institut is part of the Infectious Disease Preparedness Division. Work in the department focuses on:
- Understanding the causes, spread, and burden of infectious diseases
- Identifying populations at high risk
- Vaccine safety and effectiveness
- Antimicrobial drug use and resistance
These efforts support evidence-based decisions on prevention, surveillance, and response.
- In addition to applied research, the department develops workflows, data pipelines, and methods that support efficient and reproducible analyses and presentation of health data.
- Work on artificial intelligence focuses on predictive models that can support decision-making in the Danish healthcare system, including risk stratification, early warning systems and prioritization tools.
The department has an established record of scientific collaboration with national and international stakeholders. This includes partnerships with European and global public health and regulatory organizations, such as the European Medicines Agency, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the Global Vaccine Data Network, and public health institutes across Europe.
The department houses approx. 25 data scientists, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, medical doctors and administrative staff.
