The pneumococcal vaccine Pneumovax®23 is being discontinued

The company behind the pneumococcal vaccine Pneumovax®23 (MSD) has informed Statens Serum Institut (SSI) that the vaccine is being discontinued completely.

SSI no longer stocks the vaccine, but it has been available through pharmacies. The company states that the final delivery of approximately 500 doses is expected in August 2026. When no more doses are available, the vaccine will be removed from the reimbursement list, and it will no longer be possible to issue prescriptions for it.

As a result, SSI has updated the professional recommendations for pneumococcal vaccination. Pneumovax®23 is no longer included in the recommendations, and people at increased or particularly increased risk of serious pneumococcal disease can instead be vaccinated with a conjugate pneumococcal vaccine (Capvaxive® or Prevenar20®). See which groups are eligible for conditional reimbursement for these two vaccines on the Danish Health Authority’s website.
