National surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

The virus SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, can be found in the feces of some infected individuals and consequently in wastewater. By examining wastewater for the presence of SARS-CoV-2, it is possible to understand the level of infection in the area from which the wastewater is collected.

The figure below shows the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater samples collected from all 29 sampling sites, along with the number of new hospital admissions due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Denmark.

In week 47, the concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in the wastewater is higher than in the previous week. The national growth rate, showing the average weekly growth over the past three weeks, shows an increase in the SARS-CoV-2 concentration corresponding to the category "increase".
