Biosecurity and Biopreparedness

The Centre for Biosecurity and Biopreparedness (CBB) is the national authority that issues licences to research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, hospital laboratories etc. to allow them to work with biological dual use components.

By an Act of the Danish parliament in pursuance of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1540, materials that could be misused for the development and use of Weapons of Mass Destruction - in casu biological weapons -must be secured against diversion and acquisition for nefarious purposes. CBB is in charge of administering the necessary and sufficient biosecurity requirements to fulfill this obligation.

The Centre also maintains a 24/7 response capability to counter the effects of a biological incident whether of accidental or malicious origins.

The Centre is part of Statens Serum Institut and refers to the Minister of the Interior and Health. Its staff is composed of scientifically trained personel with a background in e.g. microbiology, medicine, law or the arts or with previous experience from defence or police.
